In der“grösste Demokratie der Welt“

Indien feiert sich gerne als „grösste Demokratie der Welt“ … d.h., der bevölkerungsreichste Staat mit (abgesehen von einigen hässlichen Unterbrechungen während des Ausnahmezustandes 1974-77 und in einigen Randprovinzen wie Kaschmir) gewähltem Parlament und und eine von diesem kontrollierten Regierungen … allerdings passieren da auch andere Dinge, wie die Tageszeitung The Hindu (ein mehr oder weniger liberales und im allgemeinen einigermassen „seriöses Blatt) meldet:

„Striking workers at tyre major MRF’s Arakonam plant and their family members, who were camping outside the labour commissioner’s office here, were arrested on Saturday morning, a union official said.

„The police arrested nearly 3,000 workers and family members and kept them in a community centre. We haven’t heard anything from the labour commissioner’s office till now,“ D. Christopher, general secretary of MRF United Workers Union (UWU), told IANS.

„The Vellore collector has orally called us for a meeting on Monday. We haven’t received anything in writing,“ he added.

The worker’s strike at MRF’s Arakonam and Puducherry plants entered its 15th day on Saturday with no sign of swift settlement.

Workers at the two units went on strike on May 9 in protest against a wage agreement signed by the management with a rival labour union. Production has come to a standstill at both plants.

Following this, the MRF management declared a lockout at the Arakonam unit.

From Friday morning, agitating Arakonam plant workers and their family members began camping at the labour commissioner’s office here.

The union shifted its action venue to the State capital after the Arakonam police on Wednesday evening hit them with sticks and arrested striking workers at the plant a few hours after the Madras High Court ordered the protesters not to obstruct movement of personnel and materials at the two factories.

The directive followed a petition filed by the company for the removal of the striking workers from the factory premises.

UWU wants the MRF management to hold a secret ballot to ascertain which union has more members and negotiate only with it.“

3.) Soli-Abend: Klassenkampf und Repression im Iran (Hamburg):

Was ist passiert: Drei Tage vor dem 1. Mai 2009 rufen neun unabhängige Organisationen der ArbeiterInnenbewegung, Gewerkschaften und Initiativen, gemeinsam zur Demonstration am Tag der ArbeiterInnen auf. Am Tag vor dem 1. Mai erscheint die gemeinsam verfasste Resolution zur Kundgebung. In der Resolution heißt neben den gewerkschaftlichen Forderungen u. a.: „wir unterstützen alle emanzipatorischen und egalitären Bewegungen wie die Studentenbewegung und die Frauenbewegung“ und „wir verstehen uns als Teil der weltweiten Arbeiterklasse und verurteilen die doppelte Diskriminierung und die Rechtlosigkeit der Arbeitsemigranten aus Afghanistan und aus anderen Nationen“. Ferner wird „die entschiedene Unterstützung aller Kämpfe der Arbeiterklasse weltweit“ bekundet und die „internationale Solidarität der Arbeiterklasse im Kampf gegen das kapitalistische System“ betont.

Am 1. Mai wird unter massivem Einsatz der Sicherheitskräfte die Demonstration im Keim erstickt. Hunderte werden verprügelt, über 150 verhaftet und in das berüchtigte Evin-Gefängnis gebracht. Das Regime will seine Macht demonstrieren.

Acht Tage später erscheint ein gemeinsamer Aufruf von ArbeiterInnenorganisationen zu einer Kampagne für die Freilassung der am 1. Mai inhaftierten Frauen und Männer. Diesmal sind es 23 Organisationen und Initiativen. Tage später werden es sogar 31.

Was ist im Iran los? Entfalten sich da einen Klassenkämpfe unter den Bedingungen des islamischen Polizeistaats oder handelt es sich um eine vorübergehende Erscheinung? Wie ist die Situation der Gefangenen und wie können sie unterstützt werden? Was ist für die Zukunft des Landes und das Pulverfass naher Osten zu erwarten?

Help fight against Taliban and military operations

Donations urgently needed by Pakistan’s Labor Relief Campaign

This is a formal appeal by the Labor Relief Campaign to help in the fight against Taliban and military operations. The purpose is to provide immediate help to some of the more than 1.5 million internally displaced people from the Malakand Division of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) in Pakistan.

This displacement has resulted from the fight between the Taliban and the Pakistani government. We also aim to publish Mazdoor Jeddojuhd in the Pushto language more frequently. At present it is published weekly in Urdu and monthly in Pushto. We want to counter the ideas both of religious fanatics and state repression. We aim to aid the labour and social movements in the province by publishing their activities and views, bringing them together to form new networks.

The Situation

The Taliban have taken over parts of Pakistan. They have threatened to occupy other parts as well. To pacify them, the government went into an accord with the Taliban this April, imposing a so-called Nizam Adl (system of justice) in Malakanad. The Taliban then imposed medieval laws in the areas under their control, targeting women and minorities. This accord also provided the Taliban with the opportunity to move into other areas.

Then the government went to another the opposite extreme and launched a military operation. This then resulted in an unprecedented influx of refugees into different part of the country. The army says that the operation is meant to wipe out religious fanatics and it will take time. But the religious fanatics are holding on and in fact are spreading all over Pakistan.

A military solution cannot eliminate the fanatics. On the contrary, it will help them to spread their ideas. The Taliban lost power in Afghanistan after NATO forces occupied in 2001. However, with a few years they re-emerged in Pakistan and later re-emerged in Afghanistan. The situation is very complex.

The military operation in Swat covers up the reality that the Pakistan military considers the Taliban an asset and is not willing to sacrifice that asset to please the USA. While army is flushing the Taliban out of Swat, the Jihadi-infrastructure (training camps, seminaries, newspapers, charities; the fronts for the Taliban) remain intact in other parts of the country.

The scale of the insurgency is exacerbated by the 1.5 million people now living and festering in underfunded refugee camps or inadequate and temporary housing, devoid of gainful employment. This displacement does not engender confidence in the capacity of the Pakistani state to solve their problems.

Another major problem is the U.S. drone attacks. Over 700 people have been killed since 2006, with 164 killed in 14 attacks under Obama’s watch. These drone attacks are further fueling anti-U.S. sentiments. The US/NATO occupation of Afghanistan is detrimental to the overall stability of the NWFP.

Our Perspective & Strategy

The fight against religious extremism can only be successful when the basic problems of the working class in social, political and economic fields are solved. In addition to developing a system of free education with a secular syllabus for all, this means an end to feudalism, implementation of land reform and an end to the U.S. occupation of Afghanistan. Our strategy is to fight the fanatics with local defense committees.
