Strike in Coke Production Division of Isfahan Steel

Based on a report by the Ad Hoc Council of Isfahan Steel Workers, the evening shift contract workers at the coke production division of Isfahan Steel went on strike for about two hours on March 8. The division manager named Eshrafi met with the striking workers to head off the protests. The workers were protesting the low level of wages received for the Persian year ending in March. According to the workers, the wages received for the same period the year before was twice the amount on offer. The workers tore up the payment stubs handed out in Eshrafi’s presence.

Eshrafi asked the workers to return to work and promised to convey their grievences to senior management. While the Mobarke Steel contract workers have received the equivalent of over two thousand dollars for their past wages and wage increases, this has not been matched at Isfahan. On the contrary, since becoming “direct contract” workers (i.e. not sub-contracted) at Isfahan Steel, they have actually seen their wages decline somewhat. They are also entitled to the new year bonuses like other government employees. However, these bonuses have not been forthcoming either.

On a separate note, 20 Ehya-Gostaran Espadan workers at Isfahan Steel have been summoned to court on the basis of a lawsuit filed by Isfahan Steel. The company claims it has suffered hundreds of thousands of US dollars in losses because of an earlier strike by workers and wants to be compensated.

Anarchist in Athen von der Polizei ermordet

Der 35 Jahre alte Genosse Lambros Fountas wurde am Mittwoch morgen von den Bullen im Vorort Dafni (Süd-Athen) ermordet.

Die Polizei behauptet, er sei ein „Terrorist“ gewesen, der erschossen wurde, als er versuchte, ein Auto zu stehlen und dass er Schusswaffen mit sich führte. Fountas war einer der 500 AnarchistInnen, welche während des Riots im Politechnikum 1995 inhaftiert worden waren.

Africa: Responding to Violence against Sexual Minorities

08/03/2010: We need to understand what it means to be heterosexual as well as homosexual, and that our sexualities affect whether we live or die. During this 54th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women on the occasion of the 15+year review of the Beijing Declaration and Platform, the Coalition of African Lesbians (“CAL”) reinforces that: LGBTI rights are human rights, that we are not claiming or asking for “special” or “additional” rights BUT that we call on our African governments to condemn the violence perpetrated against sexual minorities, to refrain from engaging in this violence and to take all measures to ensure the protection of sexual minorities, in particular, lesbian and transgender women subjected to violence.

Incidents

1. On 21 November 2008, the National Assembly of Burundi for the first time in the country’s history passed a law making same-sex acts punishable between 3 months and two years in prison, along with a substantial fine. This is in addition to the enactment of legislation criminalizing same-sex marriage.[2]

2. On September 25, 2009, legislation was introduced in the Ugandan Parliament entitled the ‘‘Anti-Homosexuality Bill, 2009’’ to strengthen and expand existing Anti-Homosexuality laws to prohibit any form of sexual relations between persons of the same sex; if passed into law provides for death sentence for homosexual offenders.

3. On 18 February 2010 in Zambia, the National Constitutional Conference (“NCC”) adopted a clause introduced by the Human Rights Committee of the NCC that expressly prohibits same-sex marriage.[3] In support of this prohibition, the Southern Province minister /Daniel Munkombwe /argued that “even animals did not go for those of the same sex and wondered why human beings could lower themselves to a level below animals if animals went for the opposite sex.”

4. In South Africa in 2006, outside the Johannesburg High Court immediately after his acquittal on the charge of rape, President Jacob Zuma said: “Same-sex marriage is a disgrace to the nation and to God. When I was growing up, unqingili [homosexuals in the Zulu language] could not stand in front of me. I would knock him out”.

5. In July 2008, the Sunday World published an article by John Qwelane accompanied by a cartoon depicting homosexual as animals getting married and equating homosexual sexual orientation to bestiality.[4] In January 2010, the South African government proposed the appointment of John Qwelane as Ambassador to Uganda. The brutal murders of Eudy Simelane and Girly Nkosi have gained national attention. They represent however only a fraction of the physical and sexual violence, the prejudice and the hate that LGBTI people in South Africa are confronted with on a daily basis.

6. In Kenya, a network called “Operation Gays Out” has been initiated to kill human rights defenders and assault people suspected of being gay.

7. In Rwanda, two women en route to a leadership institute organized by the Coalition of African Lesbians were detained at the Kigali International Airport and then held in cells for two and a half weeks without any charges. Their passports are still being held by Rwandan migration officers.

The criminalization of sexual orientation and gender identity has grave consequences for the inability of sexual minorities to access to health and legal services. In South African, HIV programmes do not necessarily respond to same-sex sexuality or address the particular vulnerabilities experienced by sexual minorities. In countries such as Uganda, we have received reports that most medical practitioners refuse to treat people who identify as gay or lesbian because homosexuality is illegal and they consider it a sin. The government of Rwanda directly linked HIV/AIDS to homosexual conduct and has called on citizens to exercise “good morals among Rwandans to help control the HIV prevalence rate”.

The Yogyakarta Principles, adopted in 2007 acknowledge human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity and establish the relevant legal framework for articulating and responding to these rights violations.[5] In our context, and as articulated by the Principles, the above-mentioned incidents, governments failure to protect sexual minorities and most significantly following, governments legislative and other initiatives aimed at criminalizing homosexual identity violate the following rights:

i) The rights to universal enjoyment of human rights, non-discrimination and recognition before the law are violated when laws are introduced which criminalize the adult consensual homosexual conduct;[6]

ii) The fundamental rights to life, freedom from violence and torture, privacy, access to justice and freedom from arbitrary detention as entrenched in the UN Convention on the Prohibition of Torture, Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.[7]

iii) The rights to expression, opinion and association which emphasize the importance of the freedom to express oneself, one’s identity and one’s sexuality, without State interference based on sexual orientation or gender identity, including the rights to participate peaceably in public assemblies and events and otherwise associate in community with others.[8]

iv) On the rights of Human Rights Defenders, principle 27 recognizes the right to defend and promote human rights without discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and the obligation of States to ensure the protection of human rights defenders working in these areas.

v) In respect of the rights to redress and accountability, principles 28 and 29 affirm the importance of holding rights violators accountable, and ensuring appropriate redress for those who face rights violations.

Der 17-jährige David starb am Sonntag im Hamburger Gefängniskrankenhaus.

Nachdem er bereits tagelang jegliche Nahrung verweigert hatte, wurde er dort „tot aufgefunden“. Er hatte sich erhängt. Der aus Georgien stammende David war ohne seine Erziehungsberechtigten eingereist und saß bereits seit Februar in Abschiebehaft, in die er als Jugendlicher eigentlich nicht gehörte.

Es gibt keinen Freitod hinter Gittern!

+ Wir fordern die sofortige Abschaffung von Abschiebehaft.
+ Wir fordern ein sicheres Aufenthaltsrecht und Arbeitserlaubnis für alle Menschen, die in Deutschland leben.
+ Wir fordern die Abschaffung aller Sondergesetze für Nichtdeutsche, vor allem die Residenzpflicht für Flüchtlinge und das Asylbewerberleistungsgesetz.
+ Gerade minderjährige unbegleitete Flüchtlinge brauchen besonderen Schutz. Der Umgang mit ihnen soll sich an Kinderrechten und dem Kindswohl orientieren und nicht an rassistischen Ausländergesetzen

Güster Erklärung (1971)

Die Güster Erklärung (pdf-Datei, 403 kb), ein Selbstverständigungs- und Diskussionsdokument vom September 1971 von vier Hamburger Gruppen – der Föderation Neue Linke (FNL), des Marxistisch-Leninistischen Zentrum (MLZ, aus diesem ging die bis Ende der 1990er erscheinende, zunächst „undogmatisch-kulturrevolutionäre“, ab 1993 ins Querfront-Milieu abdriftende Zeitschrift Der Funke hervor), der Proletarischen Front – Gruppe Hamburg sowie einiger Mitglieder des SPARTAKUS-Vertriebskollektives – welche ein gemeinsames, auf die Ausweitung sozialer Kämpfe setzendes politisches Projekt jenseits von DKP und ML-Gruppen anstrebten.

Internationaler Frauentag 2010 im Iran

* Julias Blog berichtet von der Verabschiedung einer Resolution der Grünen Versammlung der Aktivistinnen der iranischen Frauenbewegung am Vortage (nachfolgend ein Auszug aus diesem Bericht), Change for Equality berichtete von Vorbereitungen zum Internationalen Frauentag in verschiedenen Städten:

„Die Verfasserinnen der Resolution erklären, Frauen hätten einen gleichen Anteil an den Protesten der letzten Monate gegen das Ergebnis der umstrittenen Präsidentschaftswahl. Sie fügen hinzu: “Frauen haben
sich in gleicher Weise die Forderungen dieser Bewegung zueigen gemacht, ohne Furcht vor Schlägen, Inhaftierung, Studienverboten, Arbeitsverboten und Landesverweisen, Entzug diverser ziviler Rechte, ja sogar ohne Furcht vor Tod und Märtyrertum.”

Die Frauen hätten sich mit einem besseren Bewusstsein und größerer Entschlossenheit als in der Vergangenheit an der Grünen Bewegung beteiligt und hätten eine aktive und zentrale Rolle in dieser Bewegung gespielt, so die Frauen weiter. Am Schluss der Resolution heißt es, die Frauen gäben den Menschen innerhalb der Grünen Bewegung ihre Stimme, würden jedoch gleichzeitig weiter beharrlich für ihre unabhängigen Forderungen kämpfen.„

Statement by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Iran on March 8, International Women’s Day (2010)

This year we celebrate March 8, International Women’s Day under circumstances where the Iranian women with their wide participations in the mass protests of the latest months showed their undeniable role in the political and social upheavals and transformations in the society more than ever.

Iranian brave women have for long known the way and means of imposing their political presence through their uncompromising fight against the whole backward Islamic regime in Iran. Today the Iranian freedom-loving women allied with the working class, allied with the fighting and equality-seeking students, along with the street protests, as the protesting mothers of the political prisoners and those who have lost their lives, in the revolutionary movement in Kurdistan and on many other fields have been fighting at the frontline and have been a symbol of bravery and revolutionary resistance in pursuing their rightful demands.

When the Islamic regime observed women’s massive and active presence in the latest mass protests, it took all kinds of inhumane and criminal actions like imprisoning, torturing and even raping a number female detainees and later publishing its news in an attempt to frighten the women, but women through their massive participations showed that the Iranian women have taken up the fight for their humane and rightful demands and the regime’s criminal acts will not shake their will and resolution.
Under the rule of the Islamic regime in Iran, the dimensions of the oppression against women and violation of their rights is so wide and daily contempt against women is so institutionalized that any social and political change in the women’s life in the society will be only possible through women’s aware, organized and mass struggle against the regime on all levels.

The current political crisis and the situation in the society leave the Iranian women movement and the society with only two different political alternatives. One is the liberal and capitalistic alternative which is pretending that people’s protests were only against the rigged elections and for reforms within the regime, with a soft and velvet revolution on the horizon, trying to reshuffle the enslaving capitalist system and thus the continuation of the people’s rights violation; and the other alternative is the worker’s revolution and a socialist system where the human emancipation from the enslaving salary work, and end to all kinds of discriminations and a society of free, equal and prosperous people is the horizon.

If the women’s movement doesn’t want its massive social force to become the reserve force in service of the Iranian liberalism for reforming the Islamic regime and wants to save its basic demands from being compromised by liberalist groups, it has no other choice but to embrace the socialist strategy and ally with the labor movement. The women’s movement by adopting the socialistic policy can set back the regime and make political openings in the society in favor of its advancement realizing its demands.
