Open letter: we are all Greek Jews

The neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn entered the Greek parliament this month. With its swastika-inspired emblem, Hitlerian salute, reference to Mein Kampf, antisemitic and racist ideology, Holocaust denial, violence against migrants, threats against journalists and personality cult, the party is the lineal heir of the German national-socialist party that led Europe and the world into chaos and bloodshed.

Unfortunately, Greece is not the only country threatened by this revival of Nazi ideology. In Latvia this year, the president of the republic has for the first time supported the annual former Waffen SS march, in spite of strong criticism. In Austria the FPÖ, an extreme right organisation that nurtures Third Reich nostalgia, is favourite in the polls for the next parliamentary elections. In Hungary, the Hungarian Guard Movement, descendant of The Arrow Cross party – the former militia responsible for the extermination of Jews and Gypsies – terrorises Jewish populations and holds direct responsibility for provoking deadly attacks against Roma people.

This revival was made possible by the systematic attack by extreme right parties against the republican ideal that recognises that everyone belongs to the same national community, together. This campaign against “togetherness” is modelled on Geert Wilders’ strategy for his Freedom party, launched in the early 2000s. The core of this strategy is to hide a rhetoric promoting race inequality behind a “cultural” fight against the so-called “Islamisation of Europe”.

In this ongoing economic and social crisis, which favours a frenzied search for scapegoats and strengthens the fear of the decline of the “old continent”, this strategy has been revealed to be worryingly efficient. It has also enabled extreme right parties to support – or even to become members of – governing coalitions, normalising racist and antisemitic speech along the way. This new extreme right has also paved the way for parties which, just like Golden Dawn, can now legitimately win votes while openly promoting hate speech.

Faced with this terrifying situation – exemplified by the election of neo-Nazis deputies in the Greek parliament – we are asserting our solidarity: we are all Greek Jews.

We refuse to accept that on our continent, Jewish, immigrant, Muslim, Roma or black people might fear for their lives because of who they are. We invite all citizens, political parties, unions, civil society, intellectuals and artists to fight the extreme right by promoting and bringing to life the European dream. We must always remember that this dream was built on the ruins of Nazism. We must never forget about the Shoah. Our dream is of a continent free from racism and antisemitism. It is the project of a society based on “togetherness” – beyond boundaries.

To see this dream embodied again, it is urgent to put an end to two dogmas. First, we must refute the dogma of austerity which is responsible for terrible damage, creating the conditions that explain the success of populist parties, and limits the future of our European youth, sacrificed on the altar of perpetual austerity.

Second, we must refute the dogma of “the European fortress”, which favours the spread of anti-immigrant speeches and the lockdown of Europe’s frontiers, especially when a core element of European postwar identity – its social welfare system – requires the economic input of immigration to remain sustainable.

It is of the utmost importance for European institutions to renew their pursuit for democracy, social progress and the promotion of equality. Those citizens who, particularly in times of crisis, are the target of racial and social violence, must be protected. As Europe is undergoing a sustained assault against its core principles, we strongly believe that we must work toward a stronger Europe, right here and now. If we are not able to give life to the European dream, we are condemned to the same nightmare, in Greece and in the rest of Europe.

Mexiko: Menschenrechtler entführt und gefoltert

In Zusammenarbeit mit “Los Mineros”, der nationalen Gewerkschaft der Minen- und Metallarbeiter (Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores Mineros, Metalúrgicos y Similares de la República Mexicana -SNTMMSRM), der wichtigsten Gewerkschaft in der mexikanischen Bergbau- und Stahl-Industrie. SNTMMSRM organisiert Beschäftigte bei multinationalen und mexikanischen Unternehmen. Aufgrund ihrer kämpferischen Haltung und politischen Unabhängigkeit sieht sich die Gewerkschaft in den letzten sechs Jahren einer systematischen Repressionskampgne ausgesetzt. Der Generalsekretär der Gewerkschaft arbeitet aus dem Exil in Kanada.

Der mexikanische Menschenrechtler José Enrique Morales Montaño vom Unterstützungszentrum für Beschäftigte (CAT) in Puebla, Mexiko, ist am 15.Mai 2012 entführt und körperlich gefoltert worden. Er war auf dem Weg zum lokalen Arbeitsgericht von Puebla, um eine Gruppe von Textilarbeiter/innen zu begleiten, die im Konflikt mit einer Firma in der Region stehen.

Sein Kidnapper hielten im über lange Zeit ein Gewehr an den Kopf und drohten, ihn und die anderen Mitglieder von CAT umzubringen. Am Abend desselben Tages setzten sie ihn auf einer verlassenen Überlandstraße nach Veracruz aus, wobei sie seinen Rucksack und das Mobiltelefon stahlen. Morales wurde schwer verletzt. Am nächsten Morgen erhielt Blanca Velázquez, die Direktorin von CAT, eine Nachricht von Morales gestohlenem Handy: “Du wirst sterben, Hure.”
Seit der Gründung des CAT 2001 hat das Zentrum erfolgreich eine Reihe von Autozulieferern, Maquila- und Textilfirmen organisiert, indem sie sogenannte “Schutzgewerkschaften” (die arbeitgebernah bzw. -abhängig sind) herausdrängten und demokratische, unabhängige Gewerkschaften etablierten.

Die Organisierungsarbeit von CAT hat die negative Aufmerksamkeit von Akteuren in Mexiko erregt, denen die Arbeit von CAT nicht gefällt, was zu einer Reihe von Angriffen führte. 2010 wurden die Büros von CAT aufgebrochen und die Beschäftigten wurden per email und Graffiti an den Wänden des Büros bedroht. nach intensiver Lobbyarbeit erhielt die CAT-Belegschaft Schutz vom Bundesstaat Puebla, der aber ohne Begründung oder Untersuchung der Drohungen ein Jahr später wieder eingestellt wurde. Die Bergarbeitergewerkschaft von Mexiko hat seit mehreren Jahren eng mit CAT zusammengearbeitet und ruft zu einer internationalen Kampagne auf umd das Leben, die körperliche Unversehrtheit und die Sicherheit von José Enrique Morales Montaño und den anderen Mitarbeiter/innen von CAT, die sich kontinuierlich für Menschen- und Arbeitsrechte in Mexiko eingesetzt haben, zu gewährleisten.

Zur Situation der Rohingya-Flüchtlinge aus Birma in Indien

Zehntausende Rohingya – Birmanisch- oder Bengali-sprachige Muslime aus der Region Arakan bzw. Rakhine State im nordwesten von Birma wurden in den letzten Jahrzehnten v.a. nach Bangladesh aber teilweise auch nach Indien vertrieben, zu deren Situation der Artikel People With No Country? in der aktuellen Ausgabe der Liberation:

“Around 2000 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, from 623 families from the northern Rakhine state in Myanmar have been in India for the past two years, forced to wander from one place to another in search of shelter and survival. Griechenland: Bullen und Faschos gemeinsam gegen Linke

von der Webseite von Searchlight, Bullen versuchten unter Beihilfe von Faschos das Büro der SEK (Schwesterorganisation von Marx21/Ex-Linksruck) zu besetzen, gemeinsame aktionen von Faschos und Bullen sind in Griechenland nichts neues, rund die Hälfte der griechischen Bullen haben bei den letzten Parlamentswahlen der offen faschistischen Chrysi Avgi-Partei ihre Stimme gegeben:

Around 30 police attempted to break in to the headquarters of the Socialist Workers Party (SEK) in Athens this morning (Thursday).

A group of fascists joined the police in shouting racist obscenities and attempting to kick down the front door.

SEK members quickly alerted the media and others on the left. The public exposure led to a senior police officer arriving at the scene to call off the attempted raid.

Police remained in the area for some time but eventually withdrew as the incident drew more publicity.

The raid began after a journalist for Workers Solidarity, Socialist Worker’s sister paper in Greece, took photographs of a police stop and search operation near the office.

The police at first threatened the journalist, before another SWP member intervened. The attempted raid began soon afterwards.

Abdulaziz al-Khair was a leading member of the Communist Action Party. He was persecuted and had to live underground for more than ten years. He was arrested and tortured in 1992, sentenced to 22 years and released in 2005. In 2007 he participated in founding the “Left Assembly”, which included the Communist Action Party, the Kurdish Left Party, the Body of Syrian Communists, the Marxist Democratic Assembly and the Coordination Committee of the Members of the Syrian Communist Party – Politburo.

“The true left in the region and the world has been with the Syrian people and their interests all along. The problem were always Stalinist parties or Soviet satellites. For them, the main criterion is the regime’s position on international conflicts. Whereas leftist principles say that the priority in defining the position towards states and parties should be according to their policies towards their own peoples. We have our critical historic view of this “leftist” deformation. We consider it to be one of the causes for the defeat of the international left which had been established according to the Soviet model while others unfortunately consider it “political realism”. In terms of its emergence, the CWP belongs to the New Left. This left, critical to Stalinism, appeared at a decisive moment in the late sixties of the last century. We remain faithful to this project.

The Syrian regime was actually to the left of the Arab regimes in general, concerning the national issue as well as in some social issues. But often this was only the surface of politics but not in depth. Although being very pragmatic, the regime for its own benefit was eager to remain in this position within the official Arab range. As the whole Arab scene shifted to the right, the Syrian regime without hesitation shifted with it, but was keen to stay on the left wing at the same time. It made continuous efforts to maintain good relations with Latin America, China and other Asian countries to use these relations when it needed them.

This situation changed with the beginning of the current popular revolution, especially when the repressive practices of the regime became obvious. What we see is the core of the regime’s policy which it has been practicing secretly for decades. Its foreign policy, admired by some leftists and patriots, was used as a cover. They were deceived, but as the truth comes to the light of day, the regimes looses its friends and allies one after the other. They are joining the ranks of those who see the necessity to respond to the people’s demands.

Hospital doctors announce decision to ignore the Ministry of Health directive and to continue treating undocumented migrants

Prior to the May 6th elections, the minister of health, Loverdos, announced undocumented migrants were to no longer receive any treatment in public hospitals in Greece. In response, hospital doctors issued, through their union body, the following statement

Doctors: “We will treat undocumented migrants. No to Loverdos’ credentials to the [Nazis of the] Golden Dawn!”

The decision of the Minister of Health [at the time] Andreas Loverdos to ban the treatment of those who are illegally in the country, with the exception of emergencies, has caused havoc in the medical community.

Hospital doctors decided to ignore the order by Loverdos, accusing him in turn that with this order he tries to give his …credentials to the supporters of the [Nazi] Golden Dawn.

After the decision of their union (OENGE), doctors will continue to treat undocumented migrants as normal. In an issued statement, OENGE says: “hospital doctors declare, for an n-th time, to the impenitent minister of health, that they shall not renounce their medical profession and turn themselves to guards of humans instead, that they shall not concern themselves with the skin color, the gender, the origin and legalising documents of any human requiring examination and treatment”.

The head of the OENGE, Dimitris Varnavas, clarifies in some stark words: “If Mr Loverdos wishes to satisfy his political obsessions or give his credentials to the supporters of the Golden Dawn, he has the capacity do so in any ways -not, however, by exploiting the professional responsibility and dignity of hospital doctors.

We announce, therefore, that we shall completely ignore the recent, pre-electoral instructions by Mr. Loverdos and that we shall continue practicing the medical profession as commandeered by our oath and medical conduct”.

Repression gegen die AmazighInnen-Bewegung in Marokko

Marokko hält nicht nur seit 1976 die Westsahara besetzt sondern diskriminiert – trotz einiger Zugeständnisse – weiterhin in der Praxis die amazighischen (gemeinhin besser unter dem Begriff Berberisch/BerberInnen bekannt) Kulturen und Sprachen, derzeit, wie ein Artikel auf der Webseite von Workers’ Liberty meldet, wird in der Er Rif-Region derzeit Repressionsschraube angezogen, ein kurzer Auszug:

“The new Islamist-controlled government in Morocco has been engaging in increased repression against the social movement which started last year under the name of the “20 February Movement”, as the Moroccan expression of the Arab Spring.

In the Berber-speaking Rif region, this repression has been intense for several weeks, with housing demolitions, widespread use of tear gas and other weapons, with deaths and many injuries.”

Das islamistische Regime im Iran hat zur Ermordung des im Exil lebenden Rappers Shahin Najafi aufgerufen, vorgeworfen wird im die Beleidigung von ʿAlī al-Hādī an-Naqī, des zehnte Imam der im Iran vorherrschenden Richtung des schiitischen Islams, tatsächlicher Grund ist, dass Shahin Najafi in Naqi die Heuchelei und Korruption der iranischen Staats- und Religionsführung kritisiert, mehr bei Ali Schirasi:

Crackdown on solidarity with Baba Jan and his comrades

While protests in different cities of Pakistan is going on, we received a bad news from Hunza valley. Six activists of Labour Party led by comrade Nasir are arrested in Karim Abad, the main city of Hunza, while flyposting the posters for the release of Baba Jan.

This is going too far, comrades are arrested even for this very normal political activity.
Demonstrations for the release of Baba Jan and four other comrades and against the torture are held in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Multan, Hyderabad and other cities today.
At Lahore, we gathered at Baghat Singh Shaheed Chouck to protest. I am writing this brief report from the demo place. This was the place where Baghat Singh and his friend were hanged by British Imperialism in 1931. We are demanding that this square should be named formally s Baghat Singh Chouck.
>Baba Jan is today’s Baghat Singh, like him, he is now busy in fighting for the rights of prisoners in Gilgit jail. He has been tortured for that. He has tried to bring religious harmony among Shia and Sunni prisoners.
