Ein Aufruf: Wir sind alle griechische Jüdinnen und Juden!

Geschrieben von entdinglichung - 29. Mai 2012

Open letter: we are all Greek Jews

The neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn entered the Greek parliament this month. With its swastika-inspired emblem, Hitlerian salute, reference to Mein Kampf, antisemitic and racist ideology, Holocaust denial, violence against migrants, threats against journalists and personality cult, the party is the lineal heir of the German national-socialist party that led Europe and the world into chaos and bloodshed.

Unfortunately, Greece is not the only country threatened by this revival of Nazi ideology. In Latvia this year, the president of the republic has for the first time supported the annual former Waffen SS march, in spite of strong criticism. In Austria the FPÖ, an extreme right organisation that nurtures Third Reich nostalgia, is favourite in the polls for the next parliamentary elections. In Hungary, the Hungarian Guard Movement, descendant of The Arrow Cross party – the former militia responsible for the extermination of Jews and Gypsies – terrorises Jewish populations and holds direct responsibility for provoking deadly attacks against Roma people.

This revival was made possible by the systematic attack by extreme right parties against the republican ideal that recognises that everyone belongs to the same national community, together. This campaign against “togetherness” is modelled on Geert Wilders’ strategy for his Freedom party, launched in the early 2000s. The core of this strategy is to hide a rhetoric promoting race inequality behind a “cultural” fight against the so-called “Islamisation of Europe”.

In this ongoing economic and social crisis, which favours a frenzied search for scapegoats and strengthens the fear of the decline of the “old continent”, this strategy has been revealed to be worryingly efficient. It has also enabled extreme right parties to support – or even to become members of – governing coalitions, normalising racist and antisemitic speech along the way. This new extreme right has also paved the way for parties which, just like Golden Dawn, can now legitimately win votes while openly promoting hate speech.

Faced with this terrifying situation – exemplified by the election of neo-Nazis deputies in the Greek parliament – we are asserting our solidarity: we are all Greek Jews.

We refuse to accept that on our continent, Jewish, immigrant, Muslim, Roma or black people might fear for their lives because of who they are. We invite all citizens, political parties, unions, civil society, intellectuals and artists to fight the extreme right by promoting and bringing to life the European dream. We must always remember that this dream was built on the ruins of Nazism. We must never forget about the Shoah. Our dream is of a continent free from racism and antisemitism. It is the project of a society based on “togetherness” – beyond boundaries.

To see this dream embodied again, it is urgent to put an end to two dogmas. First, we must refute the dogma of austerity which is responsible for terrible damage, creating the conditions that explain the success of populist parties, and limits the future of our European youth, sacrificed on the altar of perpetual austerity.

Second, we must refute the dogma of “the European fortress”, which favours the spread of anti-immigrant speeches and the lockdown of Europe’s frontiers, especially when a core element of European postwar identity – its social welfare system – requires the economic input of immigration to remain sustainable.

It is of the utmost importance for European institutions to renew their pursuit for democracy, social progress and the promotion of equality. Those citizens who, particularly in times of crisis, are the target of racial and social violence, must be protected. As Europe is undergoing a sustained assault against its core principles, we strongly believe that we must work toward a stronger Europe, right here and now. If we are not able to give life to the European dream, we are condemned to the same nightmare, in Greece and in the rest of Europe.

Zur Situation der Rohingya-Flüchtlinge aus Birma in Indien

Geschrieben von entdinglichung - 26. Mai 2012

“Around 2000 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, from 623 families from the northern Rakhine state in Myanmar have been in India for the past two years, forced to wander from one place to another in search of shelter and survival. They had been in Delhi since 9 April, to take up the matter of their refugee status with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).”

Griechenland: Bullen und Faschos gemeinsam gegen Linke

Geschrieben von entdinglichung - 26. Mai 2012

Around 30 police attempted to break in to the headquarters of the Socialist Workers Party (SEK) in Athens this morning (Thursday).

A group of fascists joined the police in shouting racist obscenities and attempting to kick down the front door.

SEK members quickly alerted the media and others on the left. The public exposure led to a senior police officer arriving at the scene to call off the attempted raid.

Police remained in the area for some time but eventually withdrew as the incident drew more publicity.

The raid began after a journalist for Workers Solidarity, Socialist Worker’s sister paper in Greece, took photographs of a police stop and search operation near the office.

The police at first threatened the journalist, before another SWP member intervened. The attempted raid began soon afterwards.

Mai 2012

gefunden auf From the Greek Streets/Occupied London:

Hospital doctors announce decision to ignore the Ministry of Health directive and to continue treating undocumented migrants

Prior to the May 6th elections, the minister of health, Loverdos, announced undocumented migrants were to no longer receive any treatment in public hospitals in Greece. In response, hospital doctors issued, through their union body, the following statement

source in greek

Doctors: “We will treat undocumented migrants. No to Loverdos’ credentials to the [Nazis of the] Golden Dawn!”

The decision of the Minister of Health [at the time] Andreas Loverdos to ban the treatment of those who are illegally in the country, with the exception of emergencies, has caused havoc in the medical community.

Hospital doctors decided to ignore the order by Loverdos, accusing him in turn that with this order he tries to give his …credentials to the supporters of the [Nazi] Golden Dawn.

After the decision of their union (OENGE), doctors will continue to treat undocumented migrants as normal. In an issued statement, OENGE says: “hospital doctors declare, for an n-th time, to the impenitent minister of health, that they shall not renounce their medical profession and turn themselves to guards of humans instead, that they shall not concern themselves with the skin color, the gender, the origin and legalising documents of any human requiring examination and treatment”.

The head of the OENGE, Dimitris Varnavas, clarifies in some stark words: “If Mr Loverdos wishes to satisfy his political obsessions or give his credentials to the supporters of the Golden Dawn, he has the capacity do so in any ways -not, however, by exploiting the professional responsibility and dignity of hospital doctors.

We announce, therefore, that we shall completely ignore the recent, pre-electoral instructions by Mr. Loverdos and that we shall continue practicing the medical profession as commandeered by our oath and medical conduct”.

Bullen, Faschos, Paras, Scheisse!

Geschrieben von entdinglichung - 12. Mai 2012

“Fascists in Liverpool have today continued with their anti-working class agenda by attempting to attack workers striking over pensions at a picket line in Bootle.

At around 15.30, five instantly recognisable boneheads from the Infidels of Britain, Combined Ex Forces, and the National Front arrived at the picket, directly outside the HMRC office. The immediately started pushing people, calling everyone present, ‘paedophiles’, ‘lesbians;, ‘traitors’, ‘communists’, and ‘work-shy cunts’.

Their presence was not a coincidence as they had been posting online earlier in the day that they would be turning up at the picket with the intention of targeting well-known local trade unionists.

A police CCTV unit has been present all day and called for more officers to arrive. One member of the Combined Ex Forces (Paul James) was arrested, as he refused to stop calling every single person on the picket, ‘paedophiles’. His acolytes were then sent on their way.”

“At least 19 Indian paramilitary troops were swarmed and badly stung by bees while on a counter-insurgency operation against Maoist rebels in Chhattisgarh state.

The troops were clearing landmines in the dense forests of Narayanpur district when they were attacked.

Four of the soldiers were in “a real bad state” with serious swelling on their faces and hands, police said.

Insects and reptiles pose a major problem for the security forces deployed against the Maoists in the forests of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Orissa.

Vidal Sassoon, Friseur und militanter Antifaschist (1928-2012)

Geschrieben von entdinglichung - 10. Mai 2012

“It was a rather strange situation because the war was over. Before the war there was quite a strong fascist party led by Oswald Mosley and he and his cohorts were put in detention (jail) during the war by Churchill. After the war they came out and immediately started up again with their anti-Semitism and running through the streets and having meetings, it was quite ridiculous. Many truly brave Jewish ex-servicemen started the “43 Group” because there were 43 people at the first meeting they had. These were tough men who had been through the war. Of course volunteers were needed, I was 16 or 17 at the time, most of my friends joined the 43 Group and there were quite a few hundred of us. Truly the fascists were smashed in the streets and yes if you were scared at times because it was scary. But after we saw the pictures that came out and the whole story of the Holocaust, there was actually no way we could allow fascists to run through the streets. I was arrested one night and put in jail, the following day the judge told me ‘to be a good boy’ and let me go. That was our life in those days, we decided that we were absolutely not going to allow what happened pre-war when Jews were just beat up indiscriminately in the streets. It worked beautifully because of mainly the tough Jewish characters that were in the British armed forces during the war, they were the people that did it. But also there were quite a few gentiles who had seen the camps, the horror of Europe and fought with us.”

“Buddhistischer Faschismus” in Sri Lanka

Geschrieben von entdinglichung - 4. Mai 2012

“A mosque in the central town of Dambulla was attacked with petrol bombs and vandalized around 10 days ago by a mob led by radical Buddhist monks. To add insult to injury, the government has bowed to the mob’s demand and ordered the mosque’s demolition and relocation.

Muslims say the mosque is about 60 years old. The monks insist it was built after 1982 when the government declared the area to be a “Buddhist sacred area”. They allege that the mosque is an “illegal structure”.

Located about 150 kilometers northeast of the capital Colombo, Dambulla is a Buddhist pilgrim town. Trouble erupted when a mob of around 2,000 Sinhalese, including monks led by the mahanayaka (chief priest) of the Rangiri Dambula chapter, Inamaluwe Sumangala Thero, stormed the mosque and damaged it, disrupting ongoing Friday prayers. Television footage has captured the mob chanting derogatory and racist slogans. Monks can be seen going on a rampage, with one monk even disrobing and exposing himself.”

offenbar spielen auch europäische Vorbilder eine Rolle:

“Although Buddhism advocates peace and tolerance, the way it is practiced by a fringe—albeit one that is growing and extremely powerful—is rather violent, fanatical and far from accommodative.

The Sinhala-Buddhists’ self-perception has three components. The first is that they belong to the “Aryan Sinhala race” (as distinct from the Tamil Dravidians) and that Sri Lanka is their homeland; the second is that they are defenders of the Buddhist faith, the mission of protecting Buddhism having been entrusted to them by Buddha himself; and the third is that Sri Lanka is the home for the Sinhala language. This self-perception has created a virulent form of Sinhala-Buddhist supremacism.”

und

“So while India’s Hindu fascists look to the Ramayana to justify their supremacy, Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese chauvinists look to the Mahavamsa. To make some historical sense of this—It seems that while the people of Lanka had adopted the Aryan cosmology (proto-Hinduism) back in the myth-shrouded era of Rama, they continued to speak their Dravidian language, and to “be” Tamils. As can be gleaned from the Mahavamsa and Lakdiva websites, an actual Aryan dynasty was only imposed when the Indian emperor Asoka dispatched his son Mahinda (also rendered Mahendra, and by some accounts Asoka’s brother) to rule the island, circa 268 BCE. While Tamil is a Dravidian tongue, the Ethnologue website informs us that the Sinhalese language Pali is an Indo-Aryan one, related to Hindi and Sanskrit. It is also the liturgical language of Theravada Buddhism, much as Sanskrit is the liturgical language of Hinduism. Asoka famously established a Buddhist dynasty in India, although Hindu hegemony was re-established after his death, and Buddhist rule survived only in peripheral areas—Sri Lanka in the south; the Gandharan and Kushan states in the north (contemporary Afghanistan—the Bamiyan Buddhas destroyed by the Taliban in 2001 were also a legacy of Asoka’s influence). So while glorification of an Aryan identity (with its obvious parallels to European fascism) is the domain of Hindu extremism in India, it is linked to Buddhist chauvinism in Sri Lanka. This becomes especially clear in the portrayal of Muslims in explicitly anti-Semitic terms…

Over the past 125 years or so, violence has been directed against the asinhala (un-Sinhala) and the abaudha (un-Buddhist). During colonial rule, Buddhist revivalists like Anagarika Dharmapala mobilized the masses not so much against the colonial regime but the Christian minority, their privileged position in society and political life, and their alleged misdeeds. In the early 20th century, it was the Muslims, who dominated business and trade, who came under fire from the Sinhalese-Buddhists.

In 1915, Dharmapala wrote: “The Muhammedans, an alien people… by Shylockian methods became prosperous like the Jews. The Sinhalese sons of the soil, whose ancestors for 2,358 years had shed rivers of blood to keep the country free from alien invaders are in the eyes of the British only vagabonds.”

Get it? The Sinhalese are “sons of the soil,” while the Muslims are “alien” and even “Shylockian.” Does this sound familiar?”
