Zur Rezession in den USA

Posted by entdinglichung - 22. Juni 2008

Dark Clouds, Gathering Storm

U.S. Experiencing the Worst Period of Industrial Downturn Since the Great Depression

A new report by noted economist Charles McMillion outlines the gathering storm facing our economy. Industrial output is plunging, producer prices are soaring and the housing industry continues to crater.

It’s been 78 months since the beginning of the last economic upturn in the United States and McMillion, president and chief economist of MBG Information Services, said there is no end in sight to the economy’s worsening miseries.

According to Federal Reserve reports, industrial output fell another 0.2 percent in May after plunging 0.7 percent in April. Utilization of industry capacity fell from 80.3 percent in March to 79.5 percent in April and to just 79.4 percent in May. The incentive for business to add new capacity (jobs, equipment or buildings) is rapidly disappearing as 20.6 percent of existing capacity is presently sitting idle.

A recent Labor Dept report shows that producer prices soared by 1.4 percent in May and are now up 7.2 percent year/year – which has been driven by soaring energy costs. As demand weakens, most producers are forced to cut profits, wages and other costs in a typical downward cycle.

Unprecedented since 1933 is the fact that households have no current savings to fall back on even with Federal deficit spending (excluding Trust fund surpluses) already at troublesome levels and unprecedented dependency on foreign borrowing and asset sales. The US continues forced to borrow or sell assets to foreign interests worth $2 billion each day.

Construction starts of new homes fell another 3.3 percent in May. This is down 32.1 percent from a year ago. Permits for new home construction were also down by 1.3 percent in May. This is the worst decline in the current debt crisis which indicates that the housing crisis is not yet moderating.

According to May’s consumer price index from the U.S. Department of Labor, gasoline prices increased 15.5 percent in the past year. Food and beverage prices rose 4.9 percent and overall consumer prices increased 3.7 percent in the past year.

From all reports and statistics, it appears that there not too many silver streaks of hope in the dark economic clouds overhead.

Walter Hasenclever (1890-1940)

Posted by entdinglichung - 22. Juni 2008
