William Wilberforce – Sklavenhalter und Kolonialist

William Wilberforce stellt in Britannien speziell für die Mitte der Gesellschaft eine wichtige Integrationsfigur dar: ein „konservativer Reformer“ (und keine radikale Schmuddelfigur) und Gegner des Sklavenhandels, auf den mensch sich berufen kann, um zu zeigen, dass „unsereins damals gar nicht so schlimm war“ … und nun sowas (gefunden auf Ekklesia):

„New evidence has come to light which suggests that the evangelical campaigner William Wilberforce was involved in slavery, despite his successful campaign to abolish the transatlantic trade.

The claim that Wilberforce was actually implicated in slave trading and used slave labour himself following abolition, is made in a new book about the Clapham Sect – a small but influential group of south London social reformers and evangelical Christians – which included Wilberforce. Prominent in pre-Victorian Britain, they campaigned for the abolition of slavery and promoted missionary work at home and abroad.

The group centred on the church of John Venn, rector of Clapham. As well as Wilberforce, its members included Henry Thornton, Zachary Macaulay, Hannah More and James Stephen.

The author, Stephen Tomkins, depicts the story of the group as one of a web of family relations. Woven into the account of the characters is their famous campaign against the slave trade, and how they founded the British colony in Sierra Leone and the British and Foreign Bible Societies.

They also founded and funded many schools and privately gave away vast sums of money to people in need. They campaigned against vice and attempted to regulate prostitution and reform prisons.

Tomkins has however, also uncovered new evidence that Wilberforce was implicated in slave trading and used slave labour himself after the abolition of the trade. He was even doing so in the abolitionist colony of Sierra Leone, which he (and the Clapham Sect) had helped establish.

English Defence League (EDL): Die neuen Freunde des Sören Pünjer?

In der aktuellen Ausgabe eines deutschen Männermagazins für die Bewahrung der abendländischen Leitkultur namens Bahamas findet mensch neben einem Artikel, in welchem Uli Krug sich Jürgen Elsässer anschliesst und Papst Ratzinger gegen die fiese Kritik in Schutz nimmt, auch etwas Geschreibsel von Sören Pünjer unter dem Titel Im Geiste Winston Churchills. In Großbritannien sorgt die English Defence League für Aufregung und Verwirrung (wird hier nicht verlinkt, bitte selber heraussuchen). In dieser Tirade bemüht sich der Autor auf das Redlichste, die EDL als anti-faschistische und patriotische Gegner einer finsteren, islamisch gelenkten Verschwörung (zur Abschaffung von englischen Weihnachten und des St. George’s Day und zur Einführung der Scharia in Britannien) zu erklären (und nebenbei in einer Fussnote den Antisemitismus die „Perish Juda“-rufenden BUF von Oswald Mosley der 1930er kleinzureden), ein Unterfangen, welches nur mittels massiver Wahrnehmungsstörungen und Verdrängungsleistungen gelingt, wer sich zur EDL informieren will, sollte dies besser z.B. hier, hier und hier machen

3.) Die Höflichkeit gegenüber den Cops in Oldenburg ist aus deren Sicht ungenügend, wie Regentied berichtet:

„Im Einsatz müssen sich Oldenburgs Polizisten immer häufiger schlimmste Beleidigungen anhören. Seit Anfang des Jahres kamen bereits 64 Fälle zur Anzeige. »Das hat eine Dimension angenommen, die wie bisher nicht kannten. Es ist erschütternd«, sagte Polizei-Chef Johann Kühme. »Das hat mit Respektlosigkeit zu tun. Und dieses Verhalten richtet sich nicht nur gegen Polizisten. Hier macht sich ein Wertewandel in der Gesellschaft bemerkbar«.“

4.) Aus einem offenen Brief von Rachel Tabachnik und Bruce Wilson auf Talk2Action an Elie Wiesel auf Grund von dessen Bestreben bei einer Veranstaltung von John Hagee’s Christians United for Israel (CUFI) aufzutreten:

„John Hagee teaches „theological racism,“ the idea that the destiny of peoples is based on their biblical genealogy. Hagee claims Jewish souls are different from those of gentiles and that, according to divine plan, Jews have no right to live anywhere on Earth but in Israel. Hagee’s fellow Christian Zionists predict that a coming, divinely ordained paroxysm of anti-Semitic violence, a „second Holocaust,“ will be necessary to force all Jews to make aliyah. From the pulpit, pastor Hagee and his fellow Christian Zionists preach their theological racism that risks provoking such a catastrophe.

John Hagee’s attacks on Judaism are well documented and have included calling Hillel an extremist whose followers incited both the killing of Jesus and centuries of anti-Semitism. From the pulpit Hagee has claimed that the anti-Christ is „partially Jewish, as was Adolf Hitler.“

Hagee also preaches that European-based Rothschilds control the US economy, through the Federal Reserve, and conspire to attack the American middle class by devaluing the dollar.“

Papst Ratzingers Verein fhrt derzeit Gesprche in einer „herzlichen, respektvollen und konstruktiven Atmosphäre“ mit den reaktionären Piusbrüdern, mehr dazu auf Atheist Media Blog und auf Analyse, Kritik & Aktion … an anderen Orten und bei anderen Themen zeigt sich der Vatikan weniger konziliant, wie Splintered Sunrise anmerkt:

„Deposing the leader of an African Church: Earlier this month Pope Benedict accepted the resignation of Archbishop Paulin Pomodimo of Bangui, the most senior Catholic cleric in the Central African Republic (CAR). The resignation followed a visit to the CAR by a papal emissary, Archbishop Robert Sarah, secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples, in March. It is widely thought that the Pope requested the archbishop’s resignation because he tolerated priests keeping mistresses.“

6.) Die Church of England hält ein Aktienpaket im Wert von 29 Millionen Pfund wo auch Anteile der Firma BHP Billiton dabei sind:

„But today, critics of the company will present an alternative report outlining the negative impacts of many of the company’s operations – in Australia, West Papua, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, South Africa, Canada, Colombia and Chile.

The report is the work of organisations from many countries working with directly impacted communities, including church groups.

The report catalogues abuses of human rights, particularly of affected communities, issues of worker health and safety, livelihood and food security, and environmental problems. It also raises issues around climate change and BHP Billiton’s commitment to increased extraction and promotion of both coal and uranium for power production.

At the launch, representatives of communities in Colombia which are being removed to make way for expansion of the world’s biggest opencast coal mine, Cerrejon (one-third owned by BHP Billiton) will describe their own experience with the company. Farming families in villages around the mine have been deprived of their livelihoods as the mine expands and accuse the Cerrejon Coal company of failing to negotiate in good faith or offer sufficient assistance or compensation. They want BHP Billiton to make Cerrejon Coal deal with them fairly.“

Mai, gutes Wetter, leider nur kein arbeitsfreier Tag hierzulande … zwischen Stalin- und Öcalanbildern, Gewerkschaftsbannern und einem maypole (Maibaum, dessen Formen erahnen lassen, warum dergleichen vor 350 Jahren die dreckigen Sexphantasien und den Selbsthass von Puritanern beflügelte) und jede Menge Papier, was einem in die Hand gedrückt wird, darunter die üblichen Bizarrheiten, von denen einige hier Erwähnung finden sollen:

Dieses mal nicht im Bunde mit den Ausserirdischen sondern ein unterirdisches Pamphlet wird von The Posadists in Britain in den Umlauf gebracht:

Nicht weniger behämmert die UKIP/ML Communist Party of Britain (Marxist-Leninist):

„Britain as a nation is defined as a community of stable language – English; by community of territory – Britain itself; by community of economic life – our industries, skills, inventiveness, creativity; by community of culture and our unique character – which has resulted in the great class fissure throughout British society: those who create all wealth – workers, and those who exploit – capitalists.

…

Workers for Britain, on International Labour Day 1 May, calls upon workers worldwide to assert real workers‘ nationalism.“

Eigentlich ganz lieb erscheinen einem zunächst hingegen die älteren Herren von Socialist Party of Great Britain auf der Rückseite ihres Journals Socialist Studies findet mensch jedoch folgendes (Hervorhebungen im Original:

Es kann nur einen geben … nicht direkt am Kundgebungsort flatterte einem noch folgendes von A. & M. McBride aus Mallusk/County Antrim entgegen:

„* Perish = eternal punishment for those who refuse God’s plan of salvation

* Everlasting life = with God in Heaven forever in a state of supreme happiness and bliss.“

Irgendwie beunruhigend, dass lächelnde Menschen herumlaufen, welche der Meinung sind, dass alle Menschen welche nicht so sind wie sie selbst, ewig gefoltert werden müssen …

Abschliessend noch etwas Positives: Anders als vor einem Jahrzehnt als mensch das Blatt das letzte Mal in der Hand hielt, hat sich der Militant offenbar wieder zu einer lesbaren Zeitung entwickelt, weniger Cheerleading für Castro und kaum Werbung für Jack Barnes-Bücher, dafür informative Artikel beispielsweise zu antirassistischen Protesten in den USA, ein anderer Lichtblick ist der/die/das neue W.A.G. von der Whitechapel Anarchist Group (laut Daily Mail eine „bizarre Group of Misfits“):

„Following the overwhelming success of the radicl [sic!] history pub crawl, the Whitechapel Alcoholics Group (W.A.G.) proudly announces another drinkung/history binge for Saturday 30th of May. A whole new bag of surprises will be opened upon any punters that join us as we support traditional local boozers.“

Polizisten sind nie gewalttätig … (Teil 2)

Nach jenen Ergüssen nun auch noch sowas von den lieben „Freunden und Helfern“ … natürlich war immer schon klar, dass derartiges in Bullenkreisen (nicht nur in Britannien) eine gängige Ansicht war und ist; die Pseudoanonymität von Spielwiesen wie Facebook oder Blogs eröffnet dabei ein Ventil, welches Bullen dazu verleitet, scheinbar unbeobachtet verbal einmal richtig die Sau heraus lassen zu können:

„A Scotland Yard officer boasted about „the unwashed getting a good kicking“ at the G20 protests in a police blog entry posted a day after the death of Ian Tomlinson.

The Met said last night it was attempting to identify the author of the comments, which were left on the Policeman’s Blog site following the death of Mr Tomlinson, a newspaper vendor, on 1 April.“

„The Met [Londoner Bullerei] today confirmed that an Enfield police officer was being investigated over alleged Facebook comments.

Pc Rob Ward, 27, is claimed to have posted the comment an hour after Ian Tomlinson died following rioting in the City on 1 April. His message, left at 8.17 that night, referred to the world leaders‘ summit taking place the next day. Mr Tomlinson’s death was not known publicly at the time.

Pc Ward faces possible disciplinary action but has not been suspended.

The message — spelled incorrectly — reads: “Can’t wait to bash some long haired hippys up @ the G20.” Some 20 minutes after Pc Ward posted his comment he got a reply saying: “LMAO (Laughing my a**e off). Dats bad but good in da same way lol (laugh out loud).”“

Nach den Besetzungen der drei Werke des pleite gegangenen Ford-Zulieferers Visteon in London-Enfield, Basildon sowie im nordirischen Belfast und der seit mehr als fünf Wochen anhaltenden Besetzung der Kartonfirma Prisme in Dundee durch die Belegschaft haben nun Eltern zwei von der Schliessung bedrohte Schulen in Glasgow-Maryhill besetzt (in Glasgow plant die Stadtverwaltung die Schliessung von 25 Grundschulen und Kindergärten), in London-Lambeth kam es zu einer von den Bullen geräumten Hausbesetzung aus Protest gegen die Privatisierung öffentlichen Wohnraumes … ein gutes Zeichen, dass sich ProletarierInnen nicht mehr alles gefallen lassen und bereit sind, in härteren Zeiten auch (die generell notwendigen) „härteren“ Kampfformen zu praktizieren. Die britische Polizei zeigt sich geschichtsbewusst

Wie schon anderswo berichtet sind die britischen Bullen dabei angesichts der geplanten Proteste am 1. April gegen den G20-Gipfel in London eine Notstandsübung zu inszenieren. Dabei versucht die Bullerei doch immerhin laut Guardian auch ein wenig Geschichtsbewusstsein und formale Bildung zu demonstrieren:

„The security operation has been codenamed Glencoe, provoking speculation among protesters that it was chosen because of the 1692 massacre in the Highlands.“

Beim Massaker von Glencoe hatten britische Soldaten 78 Mitglieder (davon 40 Frauen und Kinder) des Clans der MacDonalds ermordet … vielleicht wäre Peterloo als Codewort passender gewesen …

Gentrifizierung ist kein nur urbanes Phänomen, in Worth Matravers/Dorset regt sich Widerstand gegen die sozialen Folgen der ansteigenden Zahl von Zweitwohnsitzen im Dorfe, der Guardian vom 21.03. berichtet:

„A week ago slogans including „No More 2nd Homes“ and „Go Away“ appeared overnight on the walls and driveways of the development of four new houses near the centre of Worth Matravers, a village of about 170 properties occupying a glorious spot on hills overlooking the extended inlet that forms Poole harbour. At around £450,000 each, the smart new homes, built from grey-brown Purbeck stone, are aimed at second home purchasers or comfortable retirees from elsewhere, rather than locals in an area where most jobs come from farming, quarrying or tourism. This development attracted extra local ire as it occupies the site of a former craft centre and cafe.“

die Parolen sind allerdings nicht unbedingt emanzipatorisch … einige Alteingesessene empfinden eine klammheimliche Freude:

„Jill Thompson is 71, a churchgoing pillar of her community and not the sort to condone vandalism. But she makes an exception for the still unidentified locals who daubed graffiti condemning second home owners and other incomers on a nearby estate of expensive new houses.

„I don’t really make a habit of encouraging criminality,“ she said on the doorstep of her terrace house in Worth Matravers, one of perhaps 40% of properties in the pretty Dorset village to be occupied all year round. „But if I’d known it was happening I’d have given them the paint.““
