However, Qatar’s influence could be crowded out by a rising Egypt or even Iraq in the future. Furthermore, if the Arab Awakening spreads from Bahrain into other Gulf emirates, Doha may need to rein in its international ambitions and address its democratic deficit at home.

Indeed, when it comes to democracy in the Gulf, the two kingdoms are rivals no more.“

Iraq: Union leader forcibly relocated

The Northern Oil Company of Iraq has forcibly relocated the President of the Kirkuk Oil and Gas Workers Union, Jamal Abdul-Jabbar, to a remote location. Jamal recently led a major walk out in support of better rights for contract workers and for a better, safer working environment. This forced relocation is a common tactic of oil sector employers in Iraq hoping to remove union activists from their positions in the union, and deter other workers from taking action, but global pressure from unions often prevents such management bullying, so we are appealing for urgent action – not least because the International Labour Conference is taking place in Geneva and the Iraqi Government, which controls the Northern Oil Company, will be particularly sensitive to further allegations of trade union repression.

Iraq: Stop the attack on the trade unions

The Iraqi government has issued a decree withdrawing its recognition of the General Federation of Iraqi Workers (GFIW) and its member unions. It has appointed a highly politicised committee to take over union structures and assets and to oversee elections. This will result in a deeply flawed election process, and weaken the Iraqi trade union movement. Please call on the Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki protesting against this gross interference in union affairs and calling on him to instead repeal the decrees, and immediately implement a fair, just and ILO-compliant labour law supporting independent and democratic trade unions.

Auch im Irak und in Irakisch-Kuridstan häufen sich die Proteste und auch hier begegnen die Herrschenden diesen mit Repression, vier Mitglieder und Sympathisanten der Worker-communist Party of Kurdistan wurden nach einer Demonstration in Sulaimanyah am 25. Februar von den bewaffneten Kräften der PUK verschleppt, nachfolgend dokumentiert das Statement der Worker-communist Party of Kurdistan:

The local authorities have abducted 4 activists after taking part in a mass demonstration in Sulaimanyah -Iraqi Kurdistan

On 25 February 2011, the masses of Sulaimanyah city in Kurdistan-Iraq held a large demonstration as part of peaceful and civilized demonstrations which have been taking place since 17th February 2011 for a better life and against oppression committed by the two ruling parties of Kurdistan, the KDP and PUK.

Recently and precisely in the demonstration of 17th February the militias of the KDP shot the demonstrators and killed 3 people and wounded many others.

The people of Kurdistan and specially Sulaimanyah city would not accept such a despotic act and started every-day demonstrations. The KDP forces and the Asaiysh (security forces) of both the ruling parties arrested and abducted those who were active in organizing mass rallies and demonstrations.

After today’s demonstration in Maidani Azadi (Freedom Square) in Sulaimanyah city which is controlled by Talabani’s militias, four members and supporters of our party by the names of (Nawzad Baban, Moayad Ahmad, Shakhawan Nasih and Khalid Majid), who actively took part in the demonstration, were kidnapped. There is no information about their whereabouts. Abduction and arresting people is a model carried out by the authorities in Kurdistan and other groups and militias. Therefore, the lives of these people are in danger.

We ask all freedom-loving people and human right’s activists to protest against this coward action of the Kurdistan ruling parties’ militias by circulating this news as wide as possible and sending protest letters to the PUK.

The British Workers’ Revolutionary Party (WRP) was a sizeable organisation up to its implosion in 1985.

From 1976, in order to fund its daily paper, Newsline, the WRP took money from Libya, Iraq and other vicious dictatorships, rewarding its paymasters with anti-Jewish propaganda and support for those regimes, dressed up as “anti-imperialism”.

In 1981, actress Vanessa Redgrave, the WRP’s best known member, sued our comrades John Bloxam and Sean Matgamna for libel for comparing the WRP to the Moonie sect and the Scientologists, and for reporting that the WRP used systematic emotional and physical violence against vulnerable young people.

The WRP tied us up us in an expensive legal case for four years, although they never took the case to court. In response, we launched a campaign for a labour movement inquiry.

We wrote in our paper that there was “circumstantial evidence” the WRP was getting money from one or more Arab governments. We challenged them to sue us on that. They never did. Their paper spoke glowingly of the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and the Libyan despot Qaddafi.

The WRP ran a heresy hunt against us because we told the truth about them. They were able to make some headway. Sizeable numbers on the left accepted the WRP’s public enthusiasm for the Libyan regime as “anti-imperialism”. A WRP-run broad paper, Labour Herald (1981-5), was able to get articles, and speakers for its meetings, from Labour Party dignitaries such as Ken Livingstone, Ted Knight, David Blunkett and even Margaret Hodge.

We were vindicated in 1985 when the WRP expelled its 72-year-old leader Gerry Healy, accusing him of sexually abusing young women members. As the fall-out increased, Healy’s associates admitted that the organisation had, in return for money, spied on Arab dissidents and prominent Jews in Britain. Most shamefully of all they helped to get a number of Iraqi Communist Party members shot by Saddam Hussein.

We were right to stand up for honesty and clean political hands in the labour movement. We were right to stand up against people who had sold themselves and become the mouthpieces for vicious despots. And we were right to say that anti-semitism and self-serving Arab nationalism, dressed up as “anti-Zionism” and “anti-imperialism”, is political poison.
