Eine weitere Eskalation der Krise im Mittleren Osten

Das Kräftemessen zwischen der Hamas und Israel ist – vorerst – mit einem “Sieg” beider Kontrahenten zu Ende gegangen. In Hinblick auf die nächsten Wahlen hat Netanyahu ein wichtiges Ziel erreicht. Er konnte sich erfolgreich als „Falke“, als würdiger Nachfolger Sharons und „Verteidiger des israelischen Volkes“ in Szene setzen, der die Sicherheit der Nation fest in Händen hält, und entschlossen gegen jeden vorgeht, der die Grenzen des Staates infrage stellt. Es ist seine Art zu sagen, dass die wankelmütige Verhandlungsbereitschaft der Arbeitspartei und der Kadima in der Vergangenheit zu nichts geführt habe, und die Israelis einzig auf den Likud-Block zählen könnten. Jeder Verzicht auf die Anwendung von Gewalt würde das „Land Davids“ nur dem palästinensischen Feind ausliefern. Auf internationaler Ebene wurden durch den kurzen Krieg und die Akzeptanz der Waffenruhe die untrennbaren Bande zwischen Israel und den USA weiter gefestigt. So hat Präsident Obama ohne Zögern seine bedingungslose Unterstützung für die See- und Luftschläge gegen Gaza City erklärt.

Auch für die Hamas gibt es trotz der 160 getöteten Zivilisten und der Zerstörung ganzer Stadtteil durch das heftige Bombardement gute Gründe Siegeshymnen anzustimmen. Dieser Farce liegen keine Wahlen zugrunde, da derzeit keine anstehen. Dennoch geht es darum, den Palästinensern einzutrichtern, dass einzig ihr bewaffneter Arm, die „Ezzedine al Kassam- Brigaden“ der „zionistischen Armee“ erfolgreich standhalten kann. Doch weitaus wichtiger ist es für die Hamas mit ihren Siegeserklärungen die PLO von Abu Mazen herauszufordern, bzw. ihr einen Verrat am palästinensischen Nationalismus vorzuwerfen.

Selbst für den neuen ägyptischen Präsidenten Mursi hat der Gaza-Krieg unerwartete Möglichkeiten eröffnet. Der Nachfolger des alten Pharaos (Mubarak) und Tanatwis hatte nach dem unbestreitbaren Sieg seiner von den fundamentalistischen Salafisten unterstützten islamistischen Partei anfangs für Aufregung gesorgt. Nun konnte er sich sowohl in der Arabischen Liga als auch auf der internationalen Bühne erfolgreich in Szene setzen. Nach anfänglichen halbseidenen Erklärungen, in denen er seine Anerkennung für alle zwischen Israel und den USA getroffenen Verträge, insbesondere das Camp David-Abkommens erklärte, legte er nach und behielt sich einige Korrekturen vor: Sollten die USA weiterhin die ägyptische Armee (ohne Tantawi) finanzieren und Ägypten als verlässlichen Verbündeten betrachten, würde alles beim Alten bleiben. Würde aber das neue ägyptische Regime in die Ecke gedrängt, wäre das alte Kräftegleichgewicht infrage gestellt. Mursi agierte geschickt zwischen zwei Stühlen. Einerseits erklärte er, dass das ägyptische Volk niemals die „palästinensischen Brüder“ der Hamas im Stich lassen würde, und kündigte eine Öffnung der Grenze nach Rafah für Flüchtlinge an. Gleichzeitig schloss er die von den Dschihadisten für Waffentransporte genutzten Tunnel zwischen Gaza und dem Sinai, und erklärte immer wieder seine Bereitschaft eine friedliche Lösung zu finden. So signalisierte er den USA schließlich seine Verlässlichkeit.

Bezüglich der angespannten Beziehungen zwischen Israel und Palästina kommt ein weiterer Faktor von besonderer Bedeutung hinzu: Von Al Arisch im Sinai verläuft eine wichtige Erdgaspipeline in die israelische Küstenstadt Achkelon. Diese Gaspipeline im Norden des Sinai teilt sich in zwei Zweige: Der eine verbindet den Golf von Akaba im Süden Sinais mit dem Jordan und liefert Gas nach Jordanien, Libanon und Syrien. Der zweite Zweig verläuft auf der Grundlage eines 2005 zwischen der israelischen Firma „Israel Electricity Corporation“ und der ägyptischen „East Mediterranean Gas Company“ (EMG) getroffenen Abkommens entlang des Gazastreifens nach Israel. Dieser Vertrag trat im März 2008 in Kraft. Dieses ägyptisch-israelische Abkommen sieht vor, dass die EMG in einer Laufzeit von 15 Jahren den Energiebedarf Israels mit 1.7 Milliarden Kubikmeter Erdgas jährlich beliefert. Darüber hinaus steht eine Erhöhung der Erdgaszufuhr um 25% und eine Vertragsverlängerung um weitere 5 Jahre in Aussicht. Gleichwohl haben dschihadistische Gruppen an der Pipeline so schweren Schaden angerichtet, dass sie drei Monate geschlossen werden musste und somit 40% von Israels Energieversorgung ernsthaft gefährdet waren.

Two armed groups said to be affiliated to the Free Syrian Army suffered heavy losses on Monday when clashes broke out between these groups and People’s Defense Units (YPG) forces in the West Kurdistan city of Serêkaniyê. The armed groups attacked the people in the city as they took to the streets for the rally organized by the Supreme Kurdish Council.

According to reports received, bodies of 14 dead members of these groups were delivered to their side by YPG forces, while at least 12 others are reported to have been killed in clashes which are reported to have lasted all day. Among those killed are reportedly three leaders of the El Sam armed group, Ali Aksud, Mecid Abdullah and Fair Haci Rahim.

The operation launched by the YPG in the area is reported to be still on.

YPG members Xalid Ömer Hamo (31), Salah Eyo ?exo (40) and Ehmed Sîno Qewas (29) and Kurdish security forces member Sileman Sino (28) lost their life in clashes.

Since hundreds of members of Free Syrian Army entered the city over Turkey on 8 November, the city has been bombed several times by forces of the Syrian regime, killing at least ten civilians and wounding around 70 others in the last one week. Around 50 houses were demolished in the attacks which forced eleven thousand people migrate from the region.

Stop the Gaza war! Wac-Maan statement

The independent trade union WAC-MAAN calls for an end to the war on Gaza, an end to the Israeli occupation, and a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders.

The Israeli military operations that started in Gaza on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, are a result of four years of time-wasting by Netanyahu’s right-wing government. The Netanyahu government has persistently refused to negotiate with the Palestinians on withdrawal from the West Bank and East Jerusalem. It has continued to expand settlements on Palestinian lands, while allowing the development of fascist gangs in these settlements.

With the peace process in deep coma, we now reach another round of violence that will not solve anything. The Israeli leaders declare that they are defending their citizens in the south, but everyone knows, in fact, that the current war can produce no more than a temporary truce. Israel’s plan is to keep Gaza separate from the West Bank, canceling any prospect of a solution while annexing the West Bank de facto. As Hamas agrees to this separation so as to keep Gaza under its own control it is a partner that Netanyhu accepts. The war is waged to terrorize the people and to push Hamas to the corner that Israel accepts.

Moreover, under cover of this war, Netanyahu’s government seeks to deflect the public’s attention from the social needs of ordinary Israelis, especially those in the south, needs which have become all the more severe since the selling of the nation’s assets to some twenty wealthy families.

In parts of Tel Aviv you might think you’re in Beverly Hills, but what one sees today in the Jewish and Arab towns of the Negev is poverty, unemployment, and the retrenchment of public services. It is well known that Netanyahu is planning a draconian austerity program. Fearful of losing votes in the coming elections, he is trying to upend the agenda by pursuing a needless war that has already led to dozens of dead and is far from over.

As an independent trade union uniting Jewish and Arab workers on an equal basis, we cannot stand indifferent to this bloody war that drags workers into supporting their real class enemy. We stand today with our Palestinian brothers and sisters – the workers and the poor in Gaza and the West Bank – who are paying this war’s heaviest price.

We all know that the war’s sole beneficiaries are the rightwing government in Israel and the Hamas government in Gaza, both of whom refuse to negotiate. The extremism continues to thrive while the workers on both sides of the 1967 lines are suffering.

It is in the tradition of the labour movement that we stand against war and for the brotherhood of Palestinian and Israeli workers. We call upon the international labour movement to take the lead in demanding a cease fire in Gaza; to take a firm stand against the Israeli occupation; and to demand progress toward a peaceful solution based on the establishment of a an independent Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital. Only when these demands are met will we be able to build our two countries, providing people with decent jobs, education and health, no longer spending billions on wars that lead nowhere.
