Ungeklärte Rolle während der Militärdiktatur: Argentinischer Papst hat anscheinend Dreck am Stecken. Ein Interview mit Myriam Bregman ist Menschenrechtsanwältin des CEPRODH (Zentrum der Akademiker für die Menschenrechte) in Argentinien. Sie führt Prozesse gegen Angehörige der früheren Militärdiktatur. Außerdem ist sie führendes Mitglied der Partei Sozialistischer ArbeiterInnen (PTS, argentinischer Sektion der Trotzkistischen Fraktion – Vierte Internationale)

Die bürgerliche Presse bemüht sich, den soeben zum Papst gewählten Argentinier Jorge Mario Bergoglio als besonders bescheiden darzustellen, er sei auch etwas fortschrittlicher als sein Vorgänger Joseph Ratzinger. Wie stellt sich das aus argentinischer Sicht dar?

Die katholische Kirche ist in schwerste Korruptionsskandale verwickelt, sie deckt die Verbrechen Tausender Geistlicher, die Kinder missbrauchten. Und weil sie deswegen in der ganzen Welt Gläubige verliert, braucht sie eine Art Gesichtsoperation, um weitermachen zu können.

Ich glaube, dass Bergoglio genau dieses Facelifting anstrebt. Die „Bescheidenheit“, die er als Papst zur Schau trägt, soll nur den Schmutz vergessen machen, den diese reaktionäre Institution in den 2.000 Jahren ihrer Existenz angesammelt hat.

Bergoglio wird vorgeworfen, er habe 1976 bei der Entführung der später gefolterten Priester Ferenc Jalics und Orlando Yorio mit der Militärdiktatur zusammengearbeitet. Was ist daran?

Yorio und Jalics waren sogenannte Volkspriester, sie arbeiteten in einem Armenviertel. Ihr Vorgesetzter im Jesuitenorden war Bergoglio. Kurz nach Errichtung der Diktatur wurden sie von Soldaten entführt und fünf Monate lang festgehalten und gefoltert. Der mittlerweile verstorbene Yorio hat bis zuletzt den Verdacht geäußert, Bergoglio habe sie ausgeliefert. Jalics, der heute in Deutschland lebt, hat sich zwar nach eigener Aussage mit Bergoglio versöhnt – aber er dementiert nicht, dass dieser sie ausgeliefert habe.

2010 musste Bergoglio als Zeuge in einem Gerichtsverfahren aussagen – du warst dabei. Was sagte er zu diesen Vorwürfen?

Er habe drei Tage nach der Entführung von Jalics und Yorio gewusst, dass sie im Folter- und Hinrichtungszentrum ESMA festgehalten wurden. Wir fragten ihn, woher er das erfahren habe, worauf er aber sehr ausweichend antwortete. Tausende Familienangehörige der Verschwundenen wissen heute – 35 Jahre später! – immer noch nicht, wohin sie verschleppt wurden und was letztlich mit ihnen geschehen ist. Bergoglio hatte also offenbar gute Beziehungen zum Militär.

Wir befragten ihn auch, ob er wisse, was mit den Kindern der Verschleppten geschehen sei – die „Großmütter der Plaza de Mayo“ demonstrieren seit vielen Jahren dafür, dass das Schicksal ihrer Enkel aufgeklärt wird. Es ist unglaublich, er wollte erst 1985 in einem Verfahren gegen Beteiligte der Diktatur davon erfahren haben! Und dabei wußte jeder Argentinier schon Jahre vor dem Sturz der Militärjunta davon. Bis heute sind 400 Jugendliche weiterhin „enteignet“, mit gefälschter Identität.

Bergoglio sei sehr bescheiden, heißt es in den Medien. Er zögerte jedoch nicht, alle Privilegien seines Amtes auszunutzen, um nicht wie jeder normale Bürger vor Gericht aussagen zu müssen. Zuerst wollte er sich nur schriftlich äußern, was das Gericht aber ablehnte. Das Gericht musste schließlich zur Kurie von Buenos Aires gehen, damit er befragt werden konnte.

Welche Rolle hat er selbst in der Diktatur gespielt?

Die gesamte Hierarchie der katholischen Kirche in Argentinien ist in den Massenmord an AktivistInnen der ArbeiterInnenbewegung und der Linken verwickelt. Ohne aktive Unterstützung der Kirche wäre das Militär nicht in der Lage gewesen, seinen konterrevolutionären Auftrag zu erfüllen.

Wie reagieren die ArgentinierInnen darauf, dass ein Landsmann Papst geworden ist?

Die bürgerlichen Medien bemühen sich rund um die Uhr, ein reaktionäres Klima der „nationalen Einheit“ zu schaffen. Es gibt aber auch progressive Sektoren, die es ablehnen, einer Person zu huldigen, die einen regelrechten Kreuzzug gegen die Rechte der Schwulen, Lesben, Transsexuellen usw. geführt hat.

Als im argentinischen Parlament über die Homo-Ehe debattiert wurde, stellte sich Bergoglio an die Spitze einer landesweiten Kampagne dagegen. In allen Kirchengemeinden des Landes mussten Briefe verlesen werden, in denen das Gesetzeswerk als „Umtrieb des Vaters der Lüge“ bezeichnet wurde, „um die Kinder Gottes zu verwirren und zu täuschen“. Eine solche Wortwahl erinnert mich an die Inquisition im 15. Jahrhundert.

Weiterhin hat er als Chef der argentinischen Kirche Leute wie Christian von Wernich als Priester geduldet – ein Priester, der schon zu lebenslanger Haft verurteilt wurde, weil er während der Diktatur an Folterungen teilnahm. Als PTS machen wir eine große Aufklärungskampagne über dieses Thema. Wir mobilisieren zu den großen Demonstrationen am 24. März, dem Jahrestag des Militärputsches von 1976.

8 March 2013: The ITUC has written to the Vatican calling on it to halt its campaign to stop the United Nations adopting stronger standards on violence against women at the UN Commission on the Status of Women meeting in New York.

“It is shocking that the Vatican is leading an unholy alliance, with Iran, to stop the UN stepping up action to protect women and girls from violence,” said ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow. “Hundreds of millions of women have experienced violence, assault and genital mutilation, and hundreds of millions more will if governments, led by the UN, fail to step up action. The idea that somehow ‘cultural or religious practices’ can be used as an excuse for violence, torture, mutilation or murder cannot be allowed to prevail in the modern era. We call on the Vatican and its government allies to drop their resistance to full protection for girls and women.”

Afghan women burn in the fire of the oppression of the occupiers and fundamentalists
Long live the struggle of the women and men of Afghanistan for independence, democracy, and social justice!

RAWA statement on 8 March 2013

It has been twelve years since the US started its ‘war on terror’ with claims of securing ‘women’s rights’, ‘human rights’, ‘justice’ and ‘stability’ in Afghanistan; and that too by relying on fundamentalists such as Sayyaf, Qanouni, Fahim, Khalili, Abdullah, Mohaqiq, Atta, Ismail, Khuram, Almas, Rabbani, Dostum, Sherzoy, Farooq Wardak, Arghandiwal, and others, who are misogynist in nature and the most brutal and corrupt creatures in the world. In this period of occupation by more than forty plunderer countries and dominance of vicious fundamentalists, contrary to the claims of the bogus propaganda by the Western media, Afghan women have not been able to achieve even the most basic rights. Rather, their sufferings and hardships have been treacherously misused for promoting the colonial policies of the US and West.

The Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA) declared in a statement a few months after the occupation of Afghanistan by the US and western countries:

“Afghan women have not been liberated… RAWA has emphasized repeatedly that no power can or will help us, except for our own people. History has not shown us a country that has freed a nation, especially if that country was responsible for the misfortune of (the invaded country’s) people at the hands of the fundamentalists.” – (March 8, 2001)

The last decade proves the truth in our prediction. Today Jehadi criminals, overindulged in Dollars and power given to them by their US masters, rape, insult, threaten, commit violence, sexually assault, and even kill women like ownerless property, and are not held accountable, prosecuted, or punished, according to the ‘law’ set by B-52. The dominant patriarchal culture which is promoted and supported by the puppet government and its fundamentalist-blighted bodies, endorses women as half of men and worthless creatures, and discriminates against them. Unfortunately, our oppressed women get no justice in the face of all this.

While Afghan women are already burning in a blazing inferno, the US and Karzai’s obedient puppet apparatus have rolled their sleeves in a bid to give a share of power to the acid-throwing Gulbuddin who has a long history of misogyny, and Mullah Omar who is an emblem of misogyny. They even want to hand over the Ministry of Justice and the Supreme Court to them. The US is sacrificing our women once more for furthering its colonial policies. For the US what only matters is that these cancerous, traitorous and mercenary tumors, pave the way for the hegemony of the US and its allies. Indeed, these looter countries are in critically need such reactionary and treacherous elements and forces to maintain their bases.

A few dolled-up showpiece women in the government, parliament, and other official bodies, like Fawzia Koofi, Sima Samar, Shukria Barikzai, Zahra Nadiri, Hassan Bano Ghazanfar, Shinkai Karrokhail, Fawzia Sadaat, Fatima Gilani, Amina Afzali, Wazhma Forough, and others, whose mouths have been sweetened with money, luxuries and foreign that come with their official posts, do not want to speak a word about the bitter truth of the situation of women, let alone stand up against, stop and prosecute, the real perpetrators of the ongoing disaster in support of their fellow women. This handful of women who have found a position thanks to the occupation, are themselves the enemies of our women in their unison with the killers in power. Therefore, we cannot possibly view their presence in important posts as the cementing of the deserving position women are supposed to have.

These women, who can be regarded as prepared nutriment to feed the US propaganda, realize that the end of the current colonial system and the puppet Karzai regime means the end of their pompous lives. This is why they themselves back the current deplorable and tragic situation. Most of these women who are slaves of the reactionary elements and occupiers, are in the service of war criminals, and in the best-case scenario, just want a few useless reforms in the rotten Karzai apparatus. For this reason, intentionally or unintentionally, these women are at the service of and among the enemies of the women of Afghanistan. These women can never represent the majority women, who have been charred in Afghanistan’s hell.

We wrote on March 8, 2005:

“The persistence of the current instability and the West’s support of the „Northern Alliance“ terrorists in Afghanistan proves that the US and her allies pay no attention to human rights and women rights, but seek only their political and economical interests.”

Today, even the most optimistic people in our country, confess that Afghan women have not been liberated, and have become a commodity for the Western propaganda. Thanks to the presence of the US, women are gang-raped by warlords, are flogged in many Taliban-controlled areas, are preys of acid attaks, or are mercilessly stoned to death. But the US and its tail-wagging servants still show them a green signal and want them to join the puppet government. A considerable number of our women are forced into prostitution of beggary due to poverty and unemployment; the maternal and infant mortality rate of Afghanistan is the highest in the world.

In this country, laws are just pieces of paper that aid only in deceiving people, and are never practically applied. The law of Elimination of Violence Against Women (EVAW) made by Karzai is a commendable document which has been set aside with no use. When criminal husbands, fathers, or brothers kill women under different contexts, they are never punished. In many cases, women are convicted by the judicial bodies and thrown into jails for the crime of ‘running away from home’, where they are further raped by the jail keepers.

In such a hostile situation, most women find self-immolation the only solution to free them from a slow torturous death. The suicide rates among our women has risen in an unprecedented manner. Here, blooming flowers like Sanobars, Saimas, Anisas, Zar Bibis, Gul Afrozes, Shakeelas, Nafeesas , Azizas, and hundreds of other innocent girls, have been blown to pieces by the filthy and blood-dripping hands of the fundamentalists. This is the agonizing reality of the life of a woman in Afghanistan, not the distorted image the false propaganda machine of the US gives to the people of the world to deceive them.

Women can never have even their basic rights in a country which is not independent, and whose people are captives in the chains of colonialism and despotism. The exit of foreign troops and our country’s independence, can be the first step in the path of the realization of values such as freedom and democracy, which are vital conditions for the emancipation of women. Our people might be able to breathe with relief without foreign troops, and their aid for fundamentalist criminals, and then labor for values like freedom, democracy with secularism, social justice and their prosperity. In the current situation, the US and NATO and its Afghan agents have suppressed the advocates of such values, and cannot indulge in their activities, as they would want to.

The women of Afghanistan should know that until they do not recognize that their rights have to be snatched with their own hands, they will not witness a better day with the slightest improvements in their condition. We women should get united and instead of burning ourselves, burn the very roots of oppression. Women in no country in the world have attained their rights with the blessings of others, without struggling themselves. We have been experiencing the gifted rights of the US and NATO for the past twelve years, and it has been nothing but enslavement and deception.

The Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA) congratulates all the justice-seeking and fighting women of the world on the International Women’s Day. We hope Afghan women will also celebrate this day in the near future in an Afghanistan free from the claws of the misogynist fundamentalists and occupiers, and on the path towards democracy and prosperity. Members and activists of RAWA pledge to fight tirelessly in this endeavor to achieve these great values.

Emancipation of women is only attainable through their own struggle!

Some researchers have suggested that Dec. 23 or 24 may be a more accurate fit, Witschey said. Either way, however, the Maya would not have been running for their doomsday bunkers.

Mexico bans Maya ceremony at ancestral temples

New Age tourists will be flocking to Mexico’s Yucatan Penninsula this week for the „end of the Maya calendar“ (sic). But Yucatecan Maya elder José Manrique Esquivel protests that he and his followers will be barred from performing ceremonies at the peninsula’s ancient Maya sites. „We would like to do these ceremonies in the archaeological sites, but unfortunately they won’t let us enter,“ Esquivel told the AP. „It makes us angry, but that’s the way it is… We perform our rituals in patios, in fields, in vacant lots, wherever we can.“ Francisco de Anda, press director for the government’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), offers two reasons for the ban: „In part it is for visitor safety, and also for preservation of the sites, especially on dates when there are massive numbers of visitors… Many of the groups that want to hold ceremonies bring braziers and want to burn incense, and that simply isn’t allowed.“

Of course that’s just the excuse. The government would much rather keep the Maya on the sidelines since they are orchestrating a massive commercial spectacle for tens of thousands of people, many of whom are are clinging to delusional hopes and irrational fears about what’s going to happen at the end of 13 Baktun–December 21, 2012.

However, the Maya are still going to be allowed to visit the sites along with the tourists, but they will likely have to pay to get in, just like everyone else.

Meanwhile, as the Maya proceed with their ceremonies, shops in a Siberian city continue to sell Apocalypse kits; Beijing residents are stocking up on crackers, bottled water, and life preservers; in southwest France, the town of Bugarch prepares for a possible deluge of visitors who believe that a mountain could save them from the end of the world; and all the big corporate media services happily continue to spread the mania–all of which stems from little more than basic ignorance toward Indigenous perceptions and realities.

A report on Venezuela’s El Tiempo notes that on Dec. 20, the day before the turning of the Maya calendar on the solstice, Esquivel will lead a ceremony—dubbed the Interactive Maya Cultural Exposition—in Bosque de Chapultepec, the principal park in Mexico City.

A commercial (up to $499 a pop, „plus airfare“) festival dubbed Synthesis 2012 is billed as being held „in Chichen Itza,“ but the website doesn’t make clear if it will actually be at the archeological site. Top-featured draw is „Maya Elder“ Hunbatz Men, who helped start the 2012 hoopla with the „Harmonic Convergence“ of 1987. We use quotation marks only because skeptics question his bona fides, and even his laudatory Wikipedia page betrays his ersatz embrace of New Age canards like the lost continents of Atlantis and Lemuria.

Even mainstream sources are cluelessly parroting the malarky about how the Maya calendar is about to „end.“ AP writes, „The Maya didn’t say much about what would happen next, after a 5,125-year cycle known as the Long Count comes to an end.“ No such cycle is ending now. A cycle called a baktun, of 400 Maya years or 394 common calendar years, is ending. It is the 13th baktun (hence 5,125, tho that number isn’t eactly right in either Maya or common years), but there is no special significance to the 13th baktun. The baktuns keep going for many thousands of years according to the Maya Long Count.
We await reports from Yucatan on whether authentic Maya voices are heard amid this spectacle.
